A Special Thank You to Our Trojan Shelter Family

Dear Trojan Shelter Family,

There has been so much good news for Trojan Shelter this month, and it is all thanks to you. Almost every week we made tremendous strides towards the approaching opening date of moving in our residents.

Just a few weeks ago, Director of Staff Hannah Mulroe organized an intensive training to prepare our volunteers for being shelter staff and keeping our residents safe. The training included getting a California food-handler license in addition to mediation, conflict management, mental health, and regular Trojan Shelter operations training. The two intensive day training was indeed long, but now our volunteers are equipped to take care of our residents and successfully complete their overnight shifts. We want to extend a special thanks to Chris Lee for making this amazing video recapping our training days.

On Friday, November 1st, different parts of the Trojan Shelter family were able to come together for our Grand Opening. We are eternally grateful for being able to see our donors, advocates, friends, volunteers, and community partners come together and see the larger picture of what it takes to make Trojan Shelter possible. It certainly has taken a village to make our mission a reality, and we were so glad to celebrate all we were able to accomplish thus far.

The Grand Opening was a HUGE success. Trojan Shelter was featured on NBC4, ABC7, KCRW, among other media outlets. We are so grateful that our mission and organization are being shared on a whole other level and excited about what we can do with this new-found visibility.

The most exciting news of all though, is that this past weekend, we finally opened our doors to residents. After a final push for mopping, organizing, and trouble-shooting our WiFi, Trojan Shelter is now home to three residents. Our applications for residents are on a rolling basis and we are eager to house more college students experiencing homelessness.

Now that we have residents living in our space, we are eager to provide them with everything they need to succeed in higher education and a place where they can call home. We hope that you will share our crowdfunding campaign on your personal networks so that we can provide our residents with continued support to finish the semester and school year strong.

With all the success Trojan Shelter has been having, I would be naive to say that it was because of the hard work of the few. Trojan Shelter is a collective effort and the fruition of our organization has been because of a heavy push thanks to many people. Thank you to all of our donors, advocates, and volunteers from all over Los Angeles, and beyond. We have created a coalition of change with supporters from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, from college-aged students to working professionals, from university administrators to professors, and from all other corners of our community. We truly have been gifted an amazing community, and our work is not possible without each and every one of you.

Thank you again, and I look forward to continually updating you on all things Trojan Shelter.

Sincerely,
Matthew Lee, Trojan Shelter Director of Media
